Psalm 119 Lesson 22 TAV

Psalm 119

Lesson 22

Tav, vs.169-176

Text: Psalm 119:169-176Let my cry come near before thee, O LORD: give me understanding according to thy word. 170 Let my supplication come before thee: deliver me according to thy word. 171 My lips shall utter praise, when thou hast taught me thy statutes. 172 My tongue shall speak of thy word: for all thy commandments are righteousness. 173 Let thine hand help me; for I have chosen thy precepts. 174 I have longed for thy salvation, O LORD; and thy law is my delight. 175 Let my soul live, and it shall praise thee; and let thy judgments help me. 176 I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant; for I do not forget thy commandments.

Intro: this is the last lesson in Psalm 119, and I pray it has been enjoyable to each one.

  1. The Letter Tav,

    1. The Meaning,

      1. The Mark,

        1. I suppose that the ending of the alphabet is fitting by putting a mark, it is the last thing we do to a paper, we sign it,

        2. it carries the idea of ownership/ to finish, or make whole or complete/ to seal/ make a covenant/ joint together/ or to sign.

      2. Examples:

        1. Bet- Tav: (the covenant of the house) Daughter,

        2. Tav- Vav- Reysh- Hey (mark security head behold) Torah

        3. Tav- Pey- Tav (mark speak mark) Contempt,

        4. Tav- Lamed (mark control) Mound, heap

        5. Tav- Cheth- Noon (mark fence life) To-k-En Measure, fixed quantity

    2. The Word of God,

      1. Need for The Word of God, vs.169-172

        1. A Need for More Understanding,

        2. one thing is for certain, man will never fully understand the word of God in our earthly life.

          • There is always something more to learn, something more to see, something more to come to gripes with.

          • The word of God is not changing, however as we change, mature, grow, we start to see the word in a different light,

            • The Holy Spirit convicts, or reveals to us more things.

              • For instance, The Holy Spirit may not bring conviction on to a new born christian for using a certain phrase, or word,

              • but as they grow, eventually the Spirit will convict their heart that a child of God does not say those words,

                • and this can be for many actions,

            • James 4:17 “Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.”

              • that knowledge is conviction,

          • notice how the Psalmist had maintained the need for the word of God from the beginning of this book all the way until the end of it.

            • We never out grow our need for the word of God,

          • Also notice that understanding comes before deliverance, vs.169&170

            • it is about knowing and applying the word, then deliverance comes,

              • knowing the word without applying does nothing for a person.

          • James 1:22-25But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. 23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: 24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. 25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.”

        3. A Need to Worship,

          • an understanding of the word of God and His Truth and Character should always lead us to the place of worship,

            • the character of God, in Exodus 34:6&7 shows us the nature and character of God and it is followed by:

            • Exodus 34:8 And Moses made haste, and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshipped.

          • Our worship should not be secret either,

            • Psalm 40:3 “And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.”

            • Acts 16:35 “And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.”

      2. Need for The Hand of God, Vs.173

        1. When we get an understanding of the word of God, then we see our own weakness,

          • we begin to understand and acknowledge that we need help,

            • as the hymn goes, I need thee every hour

          • anthropomorphism- Giving human characteristics to a non-human.

            • John 4:24 reveals to us that “God is Spirit” and those that worship Him must do it is Spirit and truth.

          • The idea here is not that we are waiting for a giant hand to reach down from heaven and move us like a chess piece into or away from situations.

          • It is the idea that we rely on God, His Strength, his ability, His understanding in everything,

          • John 15:5I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”

            • I admire the psalmist, that through trials, hardships, evil speakings against him, and physical abuse, he still acknowledges his need and reliance on God.

      3. Need for The Salvation of God, Vs.174

        1. how many things can we categorize under the phrase “I nee thy salvation”

          • the word here for salvation is deliverance,

          • deliverance form the penitential of death because of sin,

          • the deliverance of bondage to sin

          • the deliverance of bondage to iniquities

          • the deliverance of oppression

          • the deliverance of Possession

          • the deliverance of “self”

            • Matthew 16:24Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”

            • most likely the hardest thing to be delivered form,

              • this is really the key to victory of every sin, every idol thought, every thing that would separate us form God,

                • deliverance from SELF

                  • we tend to have debates around issues, using other scriptures, and trying to come up with some philosophy to morally guide us, when we should simply submit to the Lord and deny self,

                    • was I born this way or choose to be this way? Does it matter, we are to still deny self?

              • The problem is we “want” and are willing to contend with the Lord over our own desires.

                • Perhaps this is why we need vs.175,

      4. Need for The Help of God, Vs.175

        1. need God to help us, His Judgments, not ours,

          • submitting to His every judgment,

            • what He calls righteous, we accept as righteous,

            • What He calls sin, we accept as sin,

            • When He guides us left, we swing left, and when right, then we right.

        2. To help here means to “surround” to “aid”

          • what if we were in a maze, with danger, traps, and other things to try to stop or kill us,

          • And we had the choice to wander it in darkness, or to be lead through it by the hand of God?

            • Which one would we submit to?

      5. Need to be A Servant of God, Vs.176

        1. after all the psalmist endured, he comes to this conclusion,

          • we are all as lost sheep,

          • We need God to seek us,

          • His servants,

        2. at the end of it all, there is a basic principle that we must all observe if we want to be in God’s will and blessings, and that is:

          • He is God,

          • We are Servants,

          • His word is His Command,
