(the Purpose of the Law)

Text: Galatians 3:19-29

  1. What Is The Purpose Of The Law?, Vs.19-29

    1. What the Law Does NOT Do,

      1. It Does Not Produce Righteousness, Vs.11

      2. It Is Not Based On Faith, Vs.12

        Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

      3. It Is Not Based On Inheritance, Vs.18

    2. Why Was the Law Given, Vs.19

      1. The three Basic Reasons God Gave the Law,

        John 5:39 “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.”

      2. It Was Given Because of Transgression,

        See Romans 5;13

      3. It Was Given Temporarily,

        Matthew 11;13 “For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.”

        Luke 16:16 “The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached,…”

    3. Mediator,

      1. The go between,

      2. ? Is the Law against the promise of God?

    4. You Are Now Christ, Vs. 27-29

      1. You Have Put On Christ,

      2. All Are One In Christ,

      3. If You Have Put On Christ, then you are the seed of Abraham,

Points for home:

  • The Law Falls Short in Many Ways: It cannot produce righteousness, and it is about rules and regulations, not about faith.

  • The Law did have purpose: It governed the nation of Israel, It revealed the character of God, It pointed out man’s sin, and his need for salvation.

  • The Law showed the where man fell short of the standard of God, until, Jesus came as an example and guide for man to follow.

  • In the Kingdom of God, there are divisions, we are all one, and in one. And as a result, we are all heirs to the promise made to Abraham.
