Psalm 119
Lesson 3
g Gimel
Text: Psalm 119:17-24 GIMEL. “Deal bountifully with thy servant, that I may live, and keep thy word.
18 Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law. 19 I am a stranger in the earth: hide not thy commandments from me.20 My soul breaketh for the longing that it hath unto thy judgments at all times. 21 Thou hast rebuked the proud that are cursed, which do err from thy commandments. 22 Remove from me reproach and contempt; for I have kept thy testimonies. 23 Princes also did sit and speak against me: but thy servant did meditate in thy statutes. 24 Thy testimonies also are my delight and my counsellors.”

Intro: The third letter of the Hebrew Alphabet, as well as the third section to this Psalm. The Word of God is central to this Psalm as well. We will see a little different aspect of it, where as the last two sections showed the importance of reading and studying the word, this section starts to reveal the psalmist passion for the word.
Notice vs.21 “Thou hast Rebuked the Proud…” the letter of this section it key to understanding it.
Servant, Student, Stranger
- The Letter Gimel, g
- The third letter, & the number 3
- Camel,
- the third letter was originally designed to look like a camels foot,
- think of the importance of a camel in the time of the origin of the writing,
- First, power, strength, then home, then a camel,
- a camel was the engine behind the economy of the day, think how America would be without trucks, trains, planes?
- Our economy would screech to a halt.
- For the people of the Middle East, the camel was the main mode of transporting product from one are to another.
- Question: Without the Camel, how important would a written language be?
- think of the importance of a camel in the time of the origin of the writing,
- the third letter was originally designed to look like a camels foot,
- What does a “Camel” Represent?
- Something lifted up, Self-willed, Pride
- so when the writer would use this letter it was trying to convey this idea
- that is why, some of the words translate,
- Such as the first word used in this section:
- Gimel Mem Lamed, lmg – The 5th word on your homework. Benefit, Lift up the Chaos with control.

- Put the last two letters together, Alef Lamed, it’s the word for God, then add the first letter, lift up God,
- Redeem.

- The third letter, & the number 3
- We Are Servants,
- How Do We Want God To Deal With Us?
- Understanding our Place in our Relationship with God,
- If we ever forget that there is a servant master relationship between the child of God and Him, we should look at:
- See Verses 17, 23, 38, 49. 65, 76, 84, 122, 124, 125, 135, 140, 176
- in each of these verses the psalmist refers to themselves as “thy servant”
- God wants us to all be in a personal relationship with Him, but we should be reminded that that relationship is a Master, Servant relationship.
- A key component to being a servant is an open line of communication.
- Without this, it is hard for a servant to Serve.
- How could we ever hope to know what our earthly masters would have us to do, if we were never to listen to, call, or come into their presence?
- Without this, it is hard for a servant to Serve.
- God always deals “Bountifully” with His Servants,
- Psalm 13:6 “I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.”
- Psalm 116:5-7 “Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful. 6 The LORD preserveth the simple: I was brought low, and he helped me. 7 Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the LORD hath dealt bountifully with thee.”
- Psalm 142:7 “Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise thy name: the righteous shall compass me about; for thou shalt deal bountifully with me.”
- Jesus speaking of when He sent the disciples out to minister without Him, Luke 22:35 “ And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing. ”
- Philippians 4:19 “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. ”
- God is slack concerning His promises,
- The idea here is that, while the Lord deals with His servant bountifully, it enables the servant to live, and to “internalize the Word”
- God Opens the Word to His Servant/ Student,
- not only are we the servants of the Lord, we are also students,
- God is our teacher,
- Unless God opens our eyes to the Word, we will never understand it,
- Ephesians 1:17&18 “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in F3 the knowledge of him: 18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, ”
- This is why we should enter into Study asking God to illuminate the word for us,
- And I’ll tell you, there is not greater feeling than to know God speaks and reveals truth to us still today.
- not only are we the servants of the Lord, we are also students,
- Vs.19, I am a Stranger in the earth,
- the word here is the first word in last weeks home work,
- stranger or NOMAD,
- The Psalmist knew this world was not his home,
- I Peter 2:11 “Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;”
- C.S.Lewis “If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.”
- it stands to reason then, if this world is not our home, then we should not look to this world for our information about how to live, Vs.19
- Notice in vs.20 the Psalmist has a passion for knowing and understanding the word of God,
- In different lands there are different laws, and while you can and should conduct yourself under the law of the land you are in, there is a higher law, that Christians should strive to. This is the Law of God.
- the word here is the first word in last weeks home work,
- Vs.21, the Proud,
- what is pride? I can do it myself, I do not need to rely on another.
- Pride is one of the 6 deadly sins:
- Proverbs 6:16-19 “These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: 17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, 19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.”
- Consider as well:
- James 4:6 “But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.”
- I Peter 5:5 “…for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.”
- This is one of the major sins of the world today, I do not need Jesus to secure my salvation, I can do it myself.
- See Isaiah 14:13-15 (The 5 I wills of Satan)
- The last part of vs.21, they err from God’s word.
- what is pride? I can do it myself, I do not need to rely on another.
- Remove From Me the Reproach,
- the Psalmist is pleading with God to remove the reproach they have put on him,
- it appears that the psalmist had endured ridicule of others,
- it has never been popular to submit to the Lord,
- But one day, every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess
- At that due season we will then be exhaled.
- it appears that the psalmist had endured ridicule of others,
- He gives us advice on how to endure in vs.22,
- while they spake against him, he meditated on the word,
- while meditating on them, they brought him comfort.
- The word of God is not so much about bad things, but about deliverance, and eventual freedom form sin, sickness, disease, problems, hurt, etc…
- When we meditate on the word, then the things of this world seem to slip away.
- the Psalmist is pleading with God to remove the reproach they have put on him,
- Understanding our Place in our Relationship with God,
- How Do We Want God To Deal With Us?
