Psalm 119 Lesson 5
Psalm 119
Lesson 5
“Hey” Vs.33-40
Text: Psalm 119:33-40 “HE. Teach me, O LORD, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end. 34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart. 35 Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.36 Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness. 37 Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way. 38 Stablish thy word unto thy servant, who is devoted to thy fear. 39 Turn away my reproach which I fear: for thy judgments are good. 40 Behold, I have longed after thy precepts: quicken me in thy righteousness.”
Last weeks answers:
- Hey Reysh (rh) 1. Mountain
- Hey Reysh Hey (hrh) 2. Pregnant
- Hey Mem Hey (hmh) 3. Noise
- Hey Lamed Lamed (llh) 4. Praise
- Hey Alef (ah) 5. Behold
-
“Hey!”
-
An Attention getter,
-
Hands Raised,
-
in the earliest renditions of this letter, it was to look like a stick figure with raised hands.
-
This was a common letter, or word picture in the ancent world.
-
We can even see examples of it in artifacts from ancient Egypt.
-
The hieroglyph “a” and “Tua” both are men with their hands raised, one with one, and the other with both,
-
and they mean exalt/ chant, and hail, or cry out.
-
-
-
It is used for a definate article when used as a prefix of a word,
-
a definate artiocel is “The” as opposed to “a”
-
the cow in the field, rather than a cow in a field.
-
-
-
However, when used as a suffix, it denotes feminine,
-
Genesis 2:23 “…. She shall be called woman (Alef Shen hey), because she was taken out if man (Alef Shen – IYSh)
-
-
-
Something to show,
-
when we cry out behold, it is because we have something to reveal,
-
in vs.33-40, the Psalmist uses the Hey to begin each verse,
-
indicating how God can, and will teach us and cause us to understand His word.
-
-
We can see this idea in some of the words that are used,
-
the proper name of God, Behold the nails behold the hands, yod hey vav hey.
-
Another word is Hey Alef, litterally Behold
-
Hey Lamed Lamed, Praise,
-
-
-
-
A Good Ending,
-
Receive, Vs.33&34
-
Paul wrote to Timothy and said he had fought a good fight, and finished his course.
-
See II Timothy 4
-
The writer of Hebrews encourtages the Hebrews to run the race with enduracne,
-
Why? Because it is how how finish.
-
It is not the first 299 laps of a 300 lap race that matters, it is who crosses the finish line first.
-
During this year, how often will the winner be a come from behind winner?
-
-
People are not going to go crazy over the person that begins stong, and then dwindles away.
-
-
Think of the people in the bible whoi started off good, but, in the end they fell away:
-
Lot, Sampson, King Saul, Solomon, Demas
-
The end of Colossians 4:14 “Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas, greet you”
-
Philemon 1:23&24 “There salute thee Epaphras, my fellowprisoner in Christ Jesus; 24 Marcus, Aristarchus, Demas, Lucas, my fellowlabourers.”
-
II Timothy 4:9-11 “Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me: 10 For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, …. 11 Only Luke is with me.”
-
-
So how do we endure till the end?
-
-
The first is to receive what God has for us, to Learn form Him,
-
seek out spiritual understanding,
-
“teach me your ways…”
-
Give me understanding,
-
the Lord wants to give His people understanding,
-
James 1:5 “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”
-
-
-
anyone can understand the word if they:
-
first, have the indwelling of God,
-
Second, Study, and allow God to teach them
-
the carnel man cannot understand, and the saved can not know unless he listens the the spirit that dwells within him.
-
-
-
-
Obey, vs.35
-
But learning is one thing, and being obedient to it is another.
-
Notice vs.33 teach me…. I shall keep it….
-
Vs.34 Give me understanding… I shall keep it, I shall observe it,
-
But then in vs. 35 “make me walk”
-
the word comes from a phrase that means to load a bow string,
-
to give me direction.
-
-
-
-
I have said, and will continue to say, God is under no obligation to reveal futher spiritual truth if we are not willing to put into practice what we already know.
-
The idea of delighting in it is not negitive,
-
I like knowing where I am going, and whats going on.
-
It releaves any stress, and pressure.
-
If we know, and God helps us walk in His way, then we can walk much more at peace.
-
-
-
So the first thing to finish well is to learn, the second is to obey, the thrid is…
-
-
Heart and Mind, Vs.36&37
-
put our heart and mind into following the Lord and His word,
-
once again, the psalmist is asking the Lord,
-
you turn my heart to Your testiomonies,
-
You help me do this,
-
many of us know the old truth, it is easy to want to do something, but a lot harder to do it.
-
-
-
When was the last time we prayed, Lord, turn my heart to Your ways, and to Your word?
-
-
The second part of this is…
-
Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things “from beholding vanities”
-
more often than not, we do wrong, because we have’nt filled our time with doing the right things:
-
such as David, instead of going to battle with his men, he stayed home, and it lead to sin.
-
I’s sure most can relate to that,
-
-
-
The psalmist is asking God to turn his eyes form the things of this world, to God.
-
And to make him live, revive him.
-
-
-
-
Reverence, Vs.38&39
-
There is a diffrence between Fear and Reverance:
-
there is a terror and dread, but then there is also respect,
-
How often does the Lord start with, Be not afraid, or fear not?
-
How many times in the Old Testament did it state “Be not afraid” Be coragous”
-
the 23rd Psalm “I Will fear no evil…”
-
the 27th Psalm “the lord is my light… who shall I fear”
-
the 34th Psalm, He hath delivered me form all my fears
-
Psalm 118, I will not fear
-
-
-
But God does want us to “Reverance” Him,
-
this is the good “fear”
-
not a dread, but a healthy respect for who He is,and What He can do.
-
This is what vs.38 is speaking.
-
-
Why is this respect and not terror? vs.39 “Turn away my reproach which I fear: for thy judgments are good. ”
-
-
-
Desire, Vs.40
-
the last thing is this section is a deep longing for the things of God,
-
The psalmist doesn’t hold back, he longs for the Lord,
-
He has a deep desire to experience the Lord on a daily bases,
-
this is how one would finish well,
-
-
-
-
Learning, Obeying, Giving our heart and mind to the Lord,Revwerance of the Lord and His ways, and then longing to experience Him each day.
-
-
