Lesson 6

Vav (w)

Text: Psalm 119: 41-48  Let thy mercies come also unto me, O LORD, even thy salvation, according to thy word. 42 So shall I have wherewith to answer him that reproacheth me: for I trust in thy word. 43 And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth; for I have hoped in thy judgments. 44 So shall I keep thy law continually for ever and ever. 45 And I will walk at liberty: for I seek thy precepts46 I will speak of thy testimonies also before kings, and will not be ashamed. 47 And I will delight myself in thy commandments, which I have loved. 48 My hands also will I lift up unto thy commandments, which I have loved; and I will meditate in thy statutes.”

Vav (w), The Nail

  1. The Nail or Hook,

    1. Securing,

      1. The Original Pictograph was a tent peg,

        1. it carried the idea of:

          • Joining together,

          • Securing,

          • becoming bound to…

        2. When added to the front of a word, it become the equivalent of the English word “And”

          • a conjunction to join one to another, “Hooking up words phrases and clauses”

        3. Something I haven’t made a point of is the use of these same symbols in other languages: such as Chinese and many other ancient cultures.

          • These items were common, where the language was not.

          • For a Hebrew, a tent peg didn’t differ much from what the Chinese uses to secure their tents.

            • This is the same as the raised hands of Hey, the idea of a door, etc…

    2. Look Who is Talking:

      1. God Speaks, Vs.41

        1. there are several voices that speak in this section,

          • just as in life, we seem to always have several voices pulling and tugging at us,

          • to get us to listen to this or that.

            • Some voices are loud, and some not so loud,

            • it is up to us to determine what voice we will listen to.

        2. When it Comes to the voice of God, there are several ways He speaks to us:

          • He speaks to us through circumstances,

            • when our job situation, our physical condition, or friendships are affected.

            • Our circumstances can cause us to see God, and hear His guidance.

          • He also speaks to us through the counsel of His people,

            • this is the preaching, teaching, or advice from Good Christlike people

              • however, with both the circumstance and the counsel of others, we have ti line it up to the primary he speaks to us,

                • His word.

        3. His mercy and Salvation comes Vs.41 from His word,

          • His word gives us direction:

            • Psalm 119:105 “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

          • His word gives us understanding:

            • Proverbs 2:6 “For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

          • His word Gives Us comfort:

            • Psalm 119:50 “This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me.

          • John 8:31&32 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

      2. Enemy Speaks, Vs. 42&43

        1. We all know, that the enemy is constantly talking,

          • Duran Lamb, I use to like watching him play basketball for Ky, he wasn’t the best player on the floor, But he knew how to disrupt the other team with his constant talking.

        2. The enemy does the same thing to us, trying to distract us form hearing God speak.

          • We know from reading this psalm that there was an enemy that was coming against the writer.

            • vs.42 tells us. That through the word, the psalmist would have the answer to give to them that “reproached” him.

              • Is this any different today?

                • Think of the controversy of the Ark Encounter that opened here a couple of weeks ago.

                • Where was the controversy when the schools adopted the science books for this year?

                • What about the model of the universe they are teaching?

                • What about when a federal run museum displays artifacts and puts millions of years on them, there are not a lot to stand up, and say, your math, your science is wrong.

          • People still call Christians ignorant, or foolish, yet they are willing to submit to blatant lies.

        3. The word helps us to know how to respond:

          • I Peter 3:15 “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

          • but there is still more speaking going on here

      3. God’s People’s Lives Speak, Vs.44-45

        1. The Psalmist speaks of His verbal defense of the Lord in vs.43, but in Vs.44&45 he chooses an even more powerful testimony,

        2. the testimony of a walking relationship with Christ,

          • Warren Weirsby “The best defense of the faith is a transformed life that is compassionate toward others”

            • How we live is a much more powerful testimony than the words we speak.

            • The psalmist said, I have kept thy law “continually”

              • This is more than Sunday Morning, or around other Church members,

                • continually means all the time.

                  • When we are around others? When we are alone? When we are at a place we know we would never get caught by another living soul?

                • How do we act then?

                • Is there ever a proper time to let loose and give into the flesh?

        3. Notice vs.45 “…I will walk at liberty: for I seek thy precepts….”

          • the word finds the word of God restrictive, but for the child of God, and a student of the word, we know that the only place true liberty comes from being in the word,

            • I John 5:3 “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

          • where the world finds restriction, the child of God finds….

      4. God’s Word encourages us, Vs.46-48

        1. It Gives Us Boldness,

          • He says he will testify before kings and not be ashamed.

          • It is easy to stand when we are sure we are right, we have the answer.

            • In an honest debate, a big bang model will not stand to the scrutiny of the word of God.

            • Evolution will not, intelligent design apart from God will not.

            • The word of God has been examined, torn apart, scrutinized to the most finite levels, yet, there is not supporting evidence that it is wrong or mid-leading.

        2. Delight in the commandments,

          • we can delight because we know that His word brings life and blessings,

          • It will help us to avoid troubles and pit-falls,

          • It will give us Hope,

        3. We Meditate on the Word,

          • the word means to ponder, or to converse with ones self
