Psalm 119

Lesson 9

Tet (f)

Text: Psalm 119:65-72  Thou hast dealt well with thy servant, O LORD, according unto thy word. 66 Teach me good judgment and knowledge: for I have believed thy commandments. 67 Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word. 68 Thou art good, and doest good; teach me thy statutes. 69 The proud have forged a lie against me: but I will keep thy precepts with my whole heart. 70 Their heart is as fat as grease; but I delight in thy law. 71 It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes. 72 The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.

  1. Tet, to surround/ Snake, Basket

    1. Number 9

      1. To Surround

        1. The idea that is conveyed with the Tav, is that of surrounding something.

          • This is in direct contrast to the last letter Chet, to seperate.

        2. When you look at some of the words that we used this week, we can get the idea of surrounding:

          • the house that surrounds life, womb or belly, word 1

            • you can see the idea pretty easy.

          • The second word, devour or consume and surround life, Satan,

            • this is the tactic of Satan,

          • the 5th word, surround your eyes with an attention getter (Tet Ayin Hey) seduce

        3. with each of these, you can see the idea of wrapping something up, either in a good way or in the negative.

    2. A Biblical Principle of surrounding our self,

      1. We can surround our self with Righteousness or with Sin,

        1. Romans 6:16 “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?”

        2. There is Good and Evil,

          • the word TOV, (Tav, Vav, Bet) is used 6 times here in these verses,

            • the word translates to: Well 65, Good 66, Good two times in 68, Good 71, and Better 72,

          • If we look at vs.68 it lays it out for us:

            • First God is Good, He Does Good, Teach me,

              • Help Me keep surrounded by Your goodness.

        3. The opposite is true as well, the wicked surround themselves in sin,

          • vs.69, the proud have forged lies,

          • as I said a moment ago, we are servants to who we are obedient to, sin or righteousness.

      2. God Does Good,

        1. Is God’s Actions Good because He is God, or Because He does Good?

          • This is a question that a lot of people ask.

            • They want to say, that if it is Good because He is God, then He could do anything, and it would instantly become Good.

              • This is a false assumption, they use this idea to make statements like the Calvinist idea, that some people were created for hell, and because God is the one controlling that, then it is Good.

            • God Always does good,

              • I will submit, that we do not always understand what good is,

                • for instance I have been on a judges jag, Judges 3:1 “Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan; ”

                • but then, vs.4 “And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses ”

        2. So the psalmist here says, vs. 65 “thou dealt well with thy servant…”

          • David said “I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.” Psalm 37:25

          • How did the psalmist have confidence in the fact that God would do good?

            • Because of His word, it promised that He would,

          • we have the same promise today:

            • James 1:17 “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”

            • Psalm 84:11 “For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.”

            • John 10:10 “ The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

        3. the question here really becomes, do we trust and believe His word or not?

        4. The Psalmist goes on to ask the Lord to teach Him “Good Judgment” and Knowledge,

          • I Love that these two are handled different, how many know that knowledge does not always produce good judgment?

        5. The psalmist knew something about bad judgment,

          • look at vs. 67 “Before I was afflicted I went astray…”

            • going back to the theme of the letter tet, if we are surrounded in righteousness, then we will preform righteousness, if sin, then sin.

        6. He goes on to confess: he knew the word, vs.65, he believed the word, vs.66, he kept the word, vs.67,

      3. Timing is Everything,

        1. Now he wants the Lord to Teach me Thy statutes,

          • the word here is not so much the letter of the law, as it is the timing of the law,

            • statutes translates to “Appointment” it is translated in other places as portion.

          • There are appointments that God has for man,

            • I believe in the permissive will of God, and well as the perfect will of God,

              • will God allow someone to do something that is not His perfect will?

                • Yes, we have free will.

                  • But there is another word for permissive will, it is disobedient.

            • However in the perfect will of God, there is not only the action, but the timing of that action:

              • God lets us know there are timing issues involved with the things He would have us to do.

                • We see it in things like Paul wanting to visit the Romans, but held back by the Spirit,

                • When the word tells us in Due season we will be exalted,

            • Ecclesiastics tells us in 3:1 there is a time and season for everything,

            • Isaiah 40:31 tells us those who wait on the lord will renew their strength

            • Galatians 6:9 encourages us to not grow weary in well doing, for in due season we will reap our reward.

            • Jesus even submitted himself to the timing of the Father,

              • John 7:6 “Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come:  ”

      4. Shrouded in Sin, Vs.69&70

        1. there are two ways to make yourself look better if you do not follow Christ,

          • the first is to raise your own standing.

            • Become better,

          • the second, make others come down.

            • In doing so, it does not make you higher, rather it decreases the distance between you.

            • This is what the proud was trying to do, to speak lies against God’s man.

        2. Their pride kept them entangled in sin, and caused them to lie against the man of God.

          • vs.70, their heart is fat as grease.

          • Psalm 17:10 “They are inclosed in their own fat: with their mouth they speak proudly. ” (speaking about his enemies)

          • Psalm 73:6&7 “Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment. 7 Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish.”

          • when the bible uses this terminology here, as being fat as grease,

            • it is speaking of over indulgence.

            • They consume themselves with the things of this world,

      5. In Contrast,

        1. the Psalmist said, it is good that I have been afflicted,

          • this is what we see in the New Testament when we are told to…

            • James 1:2&3 “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.  ”

            • Paul considered it an honor to suffer, for the sake of Christ,

            • The disciples in….

            • Acts 5:41&42 “And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name. 42 And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.”

        2. He reconciles it is in those times of trials and problems, that he learned of God’s way, His timing,

        3. discovered that it is better than silver and gold.

          • The best education one can get is that of experience.
