Psalm 119 Lesson 117 PEY
Lesson 17
Psalm 119:129-136
Pey- the mouth
Text: Psalm 119:129-136 “Thy testimonies are wonderful: therefore doth my soul keep them. 130 The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple. 131 I opened my mouth, and panted: for I longed for thy commandments. 132 Look thou upon me, and be merciful unto me, as thou usest to do unto those that love thy name. 133 Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me. 134 Deliver me from the oppression of man: so will I keep thy precepts. 135 Make thy face to shine upon thy servant; and teach me thy statutes. 136 Rivers of waters run down mine eyes, because they keep not thy law.”

The Meaning,
-
the letter Pey is represented by a mouth carrying the meaning of:
-
to speak, to open, or the beginning,
-
the beginning is like a river, what do we call the beginning of a river or stream? The mouth.
-
-
-

The Word,
-
The Disclosing , vs.129&130
-
beginning this section the Psalmist declares the testimonies, the witness of God is wonderful.
-
Wonderful, marvelous things,
-
Pey Lamed Alef. The second word in the homework.
-
Speak to control power.
-
Think of all God has done, spoken into existence,
-
in Job this past week, as God ask those questions to Job, were you there when….
-
-
-
truly astonishing, marvelous.
-
-
But, then he declares,vs.130
-
-
-
-
“The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple”
-
Only God can reveal spiritual truth,
-
it is in the word of God that we get light and truth.
-
Luke 24:27-31 Jesus is with the disciples walking to Emmaus, when they were obviously saddened about what happened with Jesus, not knowing it was Him with them, Jesus began to share with them form the word of God the truth of the things that needed to happen.
-
You see, truth didn’t come from their understanding, it didn’t come from their experience,
-
it came form the word of God
-
-
Matthew 16:16 Peter gave his great confession, thou art the Christ the son of the Living God,
-
Jesus responded, it was not flesh and blood that taught you this but the Spirit of God.
-
-
I Corinthians 2:9-14 “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. ”
-
-
The psalmist goes on to say, he gives understanding to the simple,
-
you do not have to be a genius to understand the word, it takes the spirit of God,
-
James 1:5 tells us that if any man lacks wisdom let him ask of God,
-
-
The Desire, vs.131&132
-
after we see the discernment, and the disclosing, we see the Psalmist’ desire
-
I opened my mouth and panted, for I longed for thy commandments,
-
the idea here is the same,
-
like a man or beast going through the desert, hot and dry knowing that if they can just get back to the cool refreshing streams of God’s word they can survive.
-
-
-
vs.132, look on me with mercy,
-
withhold from me that which I deserve,
-
-
-
but then, as thou usest to do unto those that love thy name
-
the word usest, is to verdict,
-
so it is not saying do it like you use to do it,
-
he is saying, this is your character, you have chosen to do this to those who love your name.
-
I can see someone reading this, and saying “God have mercy on me like you use to have on those who love your name” in a past tense way,
-
but notice it is not loved, it is present tense love.
-
-
Have mercy, as you have already made the verdict to do to those who love Your name.
-
We serve a God that is a God of mercy, a God of judgment, and righteousness.
-
Remember that a name is much more than the identification of a person like a number or code, it is the reveling of that persons character,
-
and to know it is not just in a passing way, but in a personal way.
-
-
-
-
Incidentally the very name of God that people have tried to hide, and ignore for centuries,
-
Yood Hey Vav Hey
-
-
The Direction, vs.133&134
-
walking in the path God has directed,
-
Psalm 40:1-3 “I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. 2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. 3 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.”
-
notice, after the miry clay, he was sat on a rock, and his goings/ direction was established.
-
-
-
The psalmist knew that if he allowed sin/ iniquity to guide his life, he would be entangled and enslaved in it.
-
See: Romans 6
-
He also pleads for the face of God to shine on Him,
-
to continue to lighten his way, to show him where to go, and where not to.
-
-
Psalm 119:105 “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
-
-
The Disappointment, vs.136
-
I want to explore this further later on, if the Lord is willing.
-
Why was he disappointed?
-
Was it because they were lost and undone?
-
Was it because they didn’t know God?
-
It tells us it was because they didn’t keep His law?
-
Now, the question I want to ask and leave us with tonight is this:
-
Who are the tears for?
-
There are at least three represented here. The Psalmist (is he sad for himself) the people who didn’t keep the law (is he sad for them) or God, the law giver (is the psalmist sad for God)
