Psalm 119 Lesson 16 AYIN

Psalm 119

Lesson 16

Vs.121-128 AYIN

Text: Psalm 119: 121-128 I have done judgment and justice: leave me not to mine oppressors.122 Be surety for thy servant for good: let not the proud oppress me. 123 Mine eyes fail for thy salvation, and for the word of thy righteousness. 124 Deal with thy servant according unto thy mercy, and teach me thy statutes. 125 I am thy servant; give me understanding, that I may know thy testimonies.

126 It is time for thee, LORD, to work: for they have made void thy law. 127 Therefore I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold.128 Therefore I esteem all thy precepts concerning all things to be right; and I hate every false way.

  1. The Letter Ayin,

    1. The Eye, To See,

      1. The Meaning,

        1. along with seeing, the meaning of this letter carries the idea of:

          • Understanding,

          • Experiencing,

          • To be seen,

        2. It is one of the primary ways we take in information,

          • through seeing something, experiencing it.

          • Even today we use the same type of question to ask if a person understands:

            • Do You See What I Am Saying?

              • obviously we cannot see their words, but we can understand.

              • To see can be equated with understanding, or experiencing,

        3. this section, each verse begins with the letter Ayin,

          • showing the importance of understanding or experiencing,

            • vs. 123, makes a direct reference to the eye.

        4. Originally the drawing was that of an eye,

          • it looked more like a bulls eye,

          • and we can see the transformation of it to the modern day Ayin letter.

        5. Examples from the homework:

          • to See through the door (of death) is to see into eternity, Ayin-Dalet

          • to See through the door of life, is to see Eden, or something pleasant. Ayin-Dalet-Noon

          • The door that allows water through the eyes let you weep or cry, Dalet-Mem-Ayin

          • consume chaos with the eye is to, understand and obey, Sheen-Mem-Ayin

            • actually the first two letters Sheen and Mem, combine to make the Hebrew word for name. To know someones name is understand them, to see their true nature.

          • The last one is to see time taking it’s affect, Ayin Tav

    2. To See and Understand God’s Ways,

      1. God Will Reward Accordingly, vs.121-123

        1. In vs.121, this is not a boasting statement,

          • the psalmist has lived according to the word of God,

          • this is not saying he has been perfect,

            • we know we have all sinned and come short of the Glory of God,

              • Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”

              • I John 1:8 “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”

        2. What he is saying is that he lived according to the word of God, and applied it.

          • An interesting thing to note here is that even tho, he lived according to the judgment and justice of God, he still has “oppressors”

            • ones that oppress, defraud, violate, even try to consume him.

              • We should remember that if we are friends with God, we are enemies of the world,,

              • James 4:4 “Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”

              • John 15:18&19 “If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. 19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.”

        3. Now He is asking God, not to leave him to those that would oppress him,

          • Vs.122 the psalmist ask him to be his “surety”

            • a surety is a pledge, or a promissory note for someone,

            • a couple we might know:

              • a good faith payment for someone to hold goods, such as on a house, a car, or even lay-away.

              • The other is a co-signer,

                • on the mention of a co-signer,

                  • Proverbs 11:15 “He that is surety for a stranger shall smart (suffer calamity/ grief) for it: and he that hateth suretiship is sure. ” apprentices are mine.

                  • Proverbs 17:18 “A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend. ”

                  • Proverbs 22:26&27 “Be not thou one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts. 27 If thou hast nothing to pay, why should he take away thy bed from under thee?

                • Is this saying we should never stand good for someone?

                  • It is saying we should be understanding of the consequences.

            • The Psalmist was asking God to stand good for him,

          • Hebrews 11:6 “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”

        4. Vs.123, How many of us feel like this from time to time,

          • we look for God to answer, and it seems there is not answer in sight,

            • we see the wicked prosper, yet no judgment,

            • and the people of God, it seems like Judgment with no prosperity?

          • See Psalm 37& Psalm 73

          • throughout Psalm 73, the psalmist sees the prosperity of the wicked, and how it seems everything always turns out good for them, and then this happened…

        5. Psalm 73:17 “Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end. ”

          • after this it speaks of their slipping, their destruction and judgment.

          • God is Faithful, sin as well as righteousness will both be rewarded accordingly.

      2. Teach “ME” Vs.124-126

        1. turn our eyes to Jesus, as the song goes,

          • perhaps we should turn our attention to self rather than others.

          • Yes there are wicked, there are those who would oppress, those who would spitefully use you,

            • but our duty to them is not to judge, not to punish, but to share Jesus and pray for them.

        2. In vs.124, the psalmist turned his attention form the others to himself,

          • deal with me according to “Mercy”

          • I love that he begins with mercy,

            • perhaps there was something that come to his mind as he was complaining about the others that let him knows he needed “Mercy” as well.

              • Withholding that which we do deserve, judgment

          • Teach me thy ways,

            • Yes I want others to come to Jesus, but I also want to know Jesus more,

              • Philippians 3:8-10 “Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, 9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: 10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;”

              • Paul had just written about all he gave up for Christ, but concluded it all worth it just to “know Him” vs.10,

        3. Vs.124&125 is a plea with God for understanding and guidance,

        4. Vs.126 is a resolution to God, the work of judgement is His no ours,

          • It is God’s time to deal with the wicked.

      3. God’s Word is Precious, vs.127&128

        1. how our perceptive changes when we start to look at things through the lens of the word of God,

        2. Psalm 19:7-10 “The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. 8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.”
